What is a DOT Physical?

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam is a health examination required for commercial motor vehicle drivers to ensure they can safely operate large vehicles.

Commercial Drivers

Required for drivers of vehicles weighing 10,001+ pounds, carrying 16+ passengers, or transporting hazardous materials.

Certification Time

Most drivers receive a 2-year medical certificate. Some conditions may qualify drivers for a lesser period of time.

What to Bring to Your Exam

Required Documents:

  • Valid driver's license
  • List of current medications w/ dosage and frequency
  • Glasses or contacts (if you wear them)
  • Hearing aids (if you use them)
  • Medical records for any chronic conditions w/ medical clearance to drive from your physician
  • CPAP readout for the past year
  • Payment (cash, check, card, or apple pay)

Important Note

If you have diabetes, heart conditions, or take medications that may affect driving, bring documentation from your treating physician.
